My Favorite Restaurants in Detroit

August 16, 2023

One of life’s greatest pleasures is enjoying good food. You don’t even have to be a “foodie” to enjoy the simple pleasure of a good meal. Fortunately, if you live in the Detroit area, there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from, whether you’re in the mood for something quick and filling, or a more leisurely and sophisticated dining experience.

The good news is, you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy any of the local delicacies. Of course, as a financial advisor, my goal is to help you stay on budget and spend wisely, so I can wholeheartedly endorse these restaurants mentioned here, which are some of my favorites in Detroit.

Mr. Kabob

If you’re looking for a fast-casual place to get a bite to eat that’s still healthy and delicious, then this place is for you. When I’m on the run and want something quick, this is my go-to restaurant. There are several locations throughout Metro Detroit, including their original and their Express locations. I highly recommend their jalapeño hummus!

Maggiano’s Little Italy

For something a little nicer but still kid-friendly, my family loves Maggiano’s Italian restaurant. My last meal there was the Linguine Di Mare (spicy tomato sauce with lots of seafood), and it was great! Their spaghetti and meatballs are also really delicious. If you prefer takeout, you can’t go wrong with the meal to go.

Ocean Prime

If you’re in the mood for steak and seafood in a more upscale environment, then I recommend this place. The restaurant offers various indoor and outdoor dining areas in a fancy yet fun atmosphere, and the food is always perfect!

Shewolf

For upscale “modern Roman cuisine,” you can’t beat this James Beard award-nominated restaurant. Everything is authentic, homemade, and delicious. If I had to choose, I would recommend the Blue Steel Focaccia, La Gricia, and Zucchini Al Pizzaiolo. It’s great for a date night!

J. Alexander’s

If you’re looking for a nice sit-down restaurant with quality food and service that isn’t too stuffy, J. Alexander’s offers contemporary American food in a classy setting. Everything we have eaten here has been done very well. My family’s favorite is the Mexico City Spinach Con Queso—so good!

Astoria Pastry Shop

For something a little sweet, this award-winning family bakery, established in the early 1970s, is not one to miss. Their carrot cake and macarons are really good, as is everything else. I appreciate that they offer a wide variety of desserts and pastries, but it can sometimes be difficult to choose from so many delicious options. You’ll love how quick and easy the service is!

Krispy Kreme

Okay, this may not be very highbrow, but these are the best donuts on earth if you ask me. I think I can eat a dozen in one sitting! You can never go wrong with Krispy Kreme.
